Diesel Gets His Hannibal -- Sorta
Filed under: Action, Animation, Drama, Casting, Deals, Newsstand
Sure, Vin Diesel keeps telling us we're going to see his Hannibal movie really, really soon (I think it's safe to say that reports of it being in the can are wildly overstated). But, really, no one's going to believe him until a)there's a studio attached to pay for the thing, and b)there's some distribution. And, since he's zero for two so far, he's the only one who's counting those chickens. Thanks to BET, however, Diesel and Hannibal are actually confirmed -- for the small screen. In one of the most unexpected -- and possibly coolest, depending on who ends up doing the animation -- bits of news to come out of ComicCon, it was revealed that Diesel has signed a deal with BET to create an animated series called Hannibal the Conqueror, which "will span the life of Hannibal, from his tutelage as a warrior under his father, Hamilcar Barca, to his scaling of the Alps with an army of elephants, and his invasion of Italy." Diesel will be the voice of Hannibal and is also producing the series through his One Race Prods.,; the first six episodes will air next year in prime-time.

Ah yes, the search for self esteem by afrocentic historians and BET goes forward. Although, I must admit that Diesel does make for a passable Phoenician from Carthage (check out the lebanese to see what Phoenicans looked like). In that regards, he is better than those Black history month illustrations that have Hannibal looking like James Earl Jones covered in zebra skins.

I can buy Vinny as a North African! I just hope they dont screw up the story like in Troy- where Agamemnon and Menelaus die witout bringing home Helen. I can just imagine, the final cut showing Vincentus Diezelus Hannibalus being crowned Caeser!!! And then Martin Bernal can write a sequal- BLACK MINERVA, and we would have to hear that the Italian World Cup Team is decended from Africans!

This could be great as one of those Adult/Child friendly animated series. Much like Star Wars: Clone Wars or even Avatar: The Last Airbender...
::keeps his eyes peeled for this one::

What a great partnership!
Vin Diesel's One Race Productions and BET. The prime-time series "Hannibal of Carthage" should bring educational and animated entertainment to all ages. "Hannibal" will have the voice of Vin Diesel? Here is where experience will come in handy for Mr. Diesel. He was inspiring in "The Iron Giant." It is no surprise to this critic that BET and Mr. Diesel have signed up together. I am critical and demanding of the everything I see. I for one am looking forward to the 2007 prime-time line up. One step forward Mr. Diesel! Hannibal will make it the "big screen."
